French 18ct Cannetille Diamond Earrings c.1830
Very rare French 18ct gold cannetille earrings dating to around 1830, featuring two pear shaped garnets and six old cut diamonds.
Total diamond weight is at least 0.40ct. Earrings measure 4.5cm long including hook and are in very good condition for their age.
Cannetille is the intricate wire work which closely resembles filligree. Hugely popular in the 1820s and 30s, it usually consists of scroll shapes or coils and granulation (small balls) or milgrain (beading effect). As you can see, these earrings feature all of those decorative techniques which would have taken a goldsmith many hours to handmake.
Not hallmarked as is common with this age of jewellery but tests as being at least 18ct with jeweller's acids.
Originally purchased in France.
