Handmade South Sea Pearl Diamond Coral Gold Necklace by David
Made as a centre piece for my exhibition in Noosa earlier this year, this is a handmade gold necklace consisting of Australian south sea pearl, diamonds, coral beads and individually made links.
Four metres of 18ct gold wire was used to handmake the links which were each wrapped round a silver core. There are 18ct rose gold beads on each joining ring between the links.
The halo around the diamond on the pendant was made using a 5000 year old cuttlefish casting technique to produce the etruscan effect. From the pendant hangs a baroque south sea pearl from Australia that I picked for its interesting, beautiful shape and fantastic colour.
The coral beads are all natural - as opposed to dyed. They were recycled from a 150 year old necklace.
The necklace fastens with a diamond set clasp which is of a simple style dating back thousands of years.
I chose to make this style of link because modern casting cannot reproduce it. In total the whole necklace took more than 30 hours to make.
